In the past, people considered flying cars to be the pinnacle of transportation success, but making a fully-loaded tractor trailer (safely) drive down a public highway without human assistance is a magnitude of difficultly higher than mere flight. And, at least in a few places, it’s also much closer to practical reality.

The latest NextGov Emerging Tech column takes a look at several states that are supporting new driverless vehicle programs, and discovers the places where tractor trailers without drivers will soon be hitting the roads. The feds are helping out too, by defining new standards of vehicle communications that make it all possible.

It’s all in the latest issue of NextGov.
